Heritage timber floors are functional, timeless, and can make any room in the home or office look incredible.

While heritage timber floors are durable and can maintain a healthy sheen for many years, like anything in life, with wear and tear comes chips, scuffs, and blemishes.

But, the good news is: with the right tools and knowledge, you can restore heritage timber floors back to their former glory. And as Perth’s leading heritage timber floor experts, we’re going to show you how (the basic steps)—starting with preparation.

Preparation

Your heritage timber floor finish will only be successful if you get your preparation right. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Remove any nails or staples from the timber with care, using a nail detector if you can. Doing this will make your sanding job far easier.
  2. Wearing a mask, start to sand your floor, working as close to the edges of the floorboard as possible. Begin with coarse grit and keep on working the floor with increasingly fine sandpaper until you get down to around 120 grit.

Filling

Once you’ve picked your desired coating, you should level any gaps or holes in your floor with a wood filler that best matches the colour of your final finish. This is very important.

Fill in any gaps, chips, or dents with care; pushing the filler into each crevice with your thumb or a steel trowel, ensuring that it’s applied evenly. Allow the filler to dry for at least 30 minutes (check the directions on the tin) before sanding again with fairly fine sandpaper.

Coating

Before you start coating and finishing your heritage wood floor, you must make sure that the surface is 100% clean and the room is well ventilated.

When applying your finish, you should work methodically and follow the directions outlined on the product packaging. Apply smoothly and evenly with an appropriate rag or applicator, working from the edges inwards.

Once you’ve finished coating your floor, allow plenty of time to dry before vacuuming the surface—then kick back with a cold drink, and admire your handiwork.

While this process may appear simple, for the very best (and most long-lasting) results, you should invest in a professional touch.
