What does the installation process look like?

perth_timber_floor_installationIt takes more than high-quality hardwood flooring to create a great floor. The work we do before we install your floor ensures that your floor will last for decades and be free of squeaks, creaks, and other common wood floor problems.

Here at Allen Brothers Flooring, we’ve been installing timber flooring for more than 14 years. Let’s take a detailed look at what it takes to install beautiful wood flooring:

Step 1: Get The Room Ready

- Ideally, before we begin, you will have already finished other work, such as plastering, rendering, and painting. Not only do these jobs risk damage to the floor, but they also introduce moisture into the atmosphere. If you have recently plastered or painted, we must wait until they have fully dried before we can install the floor.

Step 2: Prepare The Subfloor

- Once the room is ready, we need to check that the subfloor is level and even. Uneven surfaces must be repaired using a self-leveling compound.

We also check the subfloor for moisture that might rise into the wood and cause swelling. If moisture is not sufficiently low, we may need to install a moisture barrier.

Finally, the subfloor must be cleaned to ensure it is free of dirt, paint, or old adhesive. This can soak into the wood and damage it or prevent the new adhesive from working properly.

Step 3: Acclimatising Your Wood Floor

- Your new wood floor should be left in the room where it will be installed for at least seven days prior to installation. We do this to expose it to the normal atmosphere in the room: changes in temperature and humidity can cause the wood to expand or contract, and we need this to happen before we install.

Step 4: Timber Floor Installation

- The adhesive is applied to the subfloor, normally starting at the longest wall. The hardwood flooring is placed on it and pressed down firmly; any excess adhesive is wiped away.

To achieve a pleasing finish, wood is mixed from several boxes – this is because the wood varies in colour and we want to show a range of hues in each area of the room.

We use spacers to create a 10mm expansion gap all the way around the room (which can later be covered by skirting boards). This accounts for if the wood expands due to a change in the conditions of the room. Failure to do this can cause the pieces to push against each other and cause damage.

Step 5: Apply an Appropriate Coating

- Without protection, dirt can quickly become ingrained into the floors, making them dull and removing their shine. Traffic and wear and tear can also be an issue. The solution is to apply an appropriate coating to the hardwood to protect it from damage and seal it from dirt. We use a wide variety of high-quality oils and wax to seal your floor and keep it looking perfect.
